Productomschrijving

How satisfying it is to seek out Ferdinand Thieriot's masterpieces and, by publishing them, end their century-long archival slumber. Following the republication of his splendid Octet for winds and strings in B-flat major op. 62 (Amadeus) of his chamber music in particular, which was left in manuscript. The outstanding quality of his compositions deserves a place in the repertoire. Thieriot, who was a friend of Brahms - with whom he corresponded -, possessed the enviable gift of being able to combine in his output great melodic invention with compositional and stylistic currents and elements drawn from such diverse sources as Mendelssohn, Schumann, Spohr and Bruckner. As an enthusiastic string quartet player and duo partner, cellist Thieriot was also skilled at displaying the tonal and technical assets of each instrument to best advantage. Thieriot's palette of genres is broad. It extends from symphonic and concertante works such as nine Symphonies, the Serenade in F major op. 44 for strings, the Sinfonietta op. 55, two piano concerti, the Violin Concerto in A major op. 68, the Concerto for three violins op. 88, a Concerto for violin and violoncello, and two organ concerti to vocal works (cantatas, a requiem, solo songs with orchestra, choir works and songs), piano and organ pieces and chamber music of constantly high quality. In this field, a further wind and strings octet in d minor, the String Octet op. 78, 12 String Quartets (!), a tremendous Clarinet Quintet, a Flute Quintet, a Flute Quartet op. 84, a Piano Quartet op. 20, the expressive Quintet a minor op. 80 for piano and wind instruments, 2 Piano Quartets op. 9 in e minor and op. 30 in E-flat major, 10 piano trios as well as violin and cello sonatas are well worth including in house music and concert programmes. Like Johannes Brahms a native of Hamburg, Ferdinand Thieriot was born there on 7 April 1838. He studied with Eduard Marxsen in Altona, then with Josef Rheinberger in Munich. After Hamburg, his first centres of teaching and activity were Leipzig (1867) and Glogau (1868-1870). For 25 years, up to 1895, he worked as 'artistic' director of the Steiermark Choral Society in Graz. After 1895, he had alternating domiciles in Leipzig and Hamburg (where many of his works were performed in philharmonic and singing academy concerts), active as composer, teacher and performer, living in Hamburg from 1902 until his death on 4 August 1919. The two Adagios op. 41 by Thieriot are gems of their kind. They appear here corrected according to the first print. The cello's tenor range makes it ideal for the viola. This opus belongs in the library of every cellist and viola player!
