In order to rescue and preserve an important part of the Brazilian composer Francisco Mignone’s (1897-1986) pianist work, we present the series 24 Valsas Brasileiras (24 Brazilian Waltzes, Urtext edition) for solo piano.
With twelve scores yet unpublished, this work was done under the supervision and technical review of Maria Josephina Mignone, to whom most of these waltzes were dedicated, and to whom the composer gave his guidelines about the interpretation of his works.
Therefore, they are meant to be a performance album for both professional musicians and students.
Composed between 1963 and 1984, the Valsas Brasileiras (Brazilian Waltzes) strongly portray Mignone’s musical style, marked by tempos, rhythms, melodies, harmonies, quite expressive textures and dynamics, along with idiomatic peculiarities, such as the search for the sonority of the guitar. In short, they combine the nationalistic and traditional elements, of which the composer made use so widely and skilfully, with an innovative and rich musical vocabulary, as a result of his new research and advances.
