Product description

Giovanni Battista Viotti, worshipped as the greatest European violinist of the late 19th century, left an enduring mark on the virtuoso violin concerto, particularly in his adopted country, France. Brahms loved his early romantic, expressive 22nd Concerto. 'Viotti's a minor Concerto is a particular favourite of mine. It is a beautiful piece, remarkably free in design; it appears as if improvised, and all of it is planned and executed in a masterly manner.' He enjoyed similar praise well beyond his time, as a composer who remained true to the Italian baroque tradition while including 'burgeoning' romanticism. He left 29 violin concertos, 2 concertante concertos for 2 violins, 21 string quartets, 36 string trios, violin sonatas and a wealth of duos for 2 violins, whose didactic value paired with lyricism and virtuosic piquancy cannot be overpraised. Their brilliance and violinistic thrust still have the power to thrill. Numerous transcriptions of the duos during his lifetime, some at his instigation, show how popular they were. We have edited the present Duos according to a contemporary print of the parts, whose title reads: 'Trois / Duos / pour / deux Violoncelles / par / J. B.Viotti. / Oeuvre 30. / No 1652. / Prix f. 2.- / A Offenbach, chéz Jean André.' The duos, reprinted in Paris by Pleyel, in Amsterdam and in London, first appeared for 2 violins as opus 7 from Artaria in Vienna. Giovanni Battista Viotti, born on May 12th, 1755 in Fontanetto da Po (Piemont) almost single-handedly taught himself the violin as a boy. In 1775 he joined the Turin court orchestra run by Gaetano Pugnani. Beside A. Celoniat, Pugnani became his teacher, and took him on a concert tour to Berne and Geneva in 1780. This was followed by stays in Dresden, Berlin, Warsaw and Petersburg, where he appeared with Pugnani at the Tsar's court and in private academies. In 1782 he performed at the Concert spirituel in Paris with phenomenal success. In 1783 Viotti withdrew from public life to devote himself to composition, the organisation of concerts and the production of operas. He took his leave of Paris as it was engulfed in the turmoil of the revolution, and in 1792 went to England, where he soon found a rich sphere of activity in J. P. Salomon's Hanover Square concerts; in the 1793 series the celebrated soloist appeared in no fewer than ten concerts. In 1794 he became musical and artistic director of the King's Theatre. Four years later, an intrigue accusing him of Jacobite sympathies caused him to be expelled from the country. He retreated to Schönefeld near Hamburg for 3 years. Rehabilitated in 1801, he returned to London, but now performed only seldomly; apart from composing, he also became a wine merchant. He participated in a few chamber music concerts of the Royal Philharmonic Society. A year later he was back in Paris, performing only occasionally, although having lost nothing of his brilliance. In 1819 he became director of the Paris opera and Italian theatre. But he was unable to halt the decline of these two institutions, and in 1822 retired from all his posts. In 1823, a disappointed man, he returned to live with friends in London, where he died in poverty on 3rd March 1824.
