Product description

Contemporaries of Andreas Spaeth praised his works' 'incomparably beautiful and original melodies'. This versatile, most diligent early romantic composer wrote over 260 works, mainly for pianoforte, which 'can be effectively used in teaching'. His 'easy church music pieces', masses and cantatas with small orchestra were particularly popular, as were the Missa pro defunctis, the Te deum laudamus op. 185, the Reformationskantate op. 250 and the oratorio Petrus, works still worth including in the repertoire today. A wealth of choral and solo songs complete Andreas Spaeth's vocal oeuvre. His pleasing, effective style is marked by a fondness for chromatic passages and a profound mastery of polyphonic writing. This is particularly obvious in his chamber music, string quartets and solo pieces for a melody instrument with piano. His operas 'Ida von Rosenau' (1821), 'Elsa' (1833), 'Der Astrolog' (1837) as well as his compositions for wind band 'testify' to a profound knowledge of instrumentation. Andreas Spaeth's effective concertante symphony for 2 solo clarinets and orchestra shows his predilection for the clarinet. This is beautifully exemplified in his '3 Nocturnes', published in 1841, titled: 3 / NOCTURNES / POUR / CLARINETTE / avec accompagnement de Piano / composés par / ANDRÉ SPAETH / Maitre de Concert de S. A. S le Duc regnant de Sax-Cobourg Gotha / Op: 175. / No. 6340 [Pl.-Nr.] - Pr. 2 fl. 24 kr. / MAYENCE, / ANVERS ET BRUXELLES / chez les fils de B. SCHOTT Andreas Spaeth (also Späth) was born in Rossach near Coburg on 9 October 1790. School teacher Georg Walter gave him his first music lessons. Highly talented, he was soon composing cantatas, songs and dances. In 1810 he joined the Coburg court orchestra as clarinettist, and received thorough-bass tuition from Kammermusikus Christian Friedrich Gumlich. During the 1814/15 campaign, in which he had to participate, he composed exclusively wind band music and military marches. In 1816 he travelled to Vienna with the duke, began further studies with Philipp J. Riotte and took violin lessons. Back in Coburg he turned increasingly to composing instrumental works; these appeared in rapid succession in Mainz, Offenbach. Paris and Brussels. In 1821, in part on account of his low salary, he accepted the vacant post of organist in Morges on lake Geneva, but in 1833 relocated to Neuchâtel, where he became very active as town organist, director of the church choir, conductor of instrumental concerts and singing teacher at the local college. He returned to his native Coburg in 1838. As leader of the court orchestra and teacher at the teachers' training college until he retired, he would for decades have a profound influence on the musical life of this ducal residence. Andreas Spaeth died at an advanced age on 26 April 1876 in Gotha.
