Mahaut 3 Sonatas for Flute and Bc
Born in Namur, Belgium, the flautist Antoine Mahaut wrote not only his wellknown Méthode but also numerous sonatas, duets and concertos for the flute. With the exception of the six sonatas, op. 1, all the solo sonatas survive in manuscript. Three sonatas from the library in Stockholm, published in modern print for the first time, make it clear why Antoine was given to calling himself Antonio. He spent part of his life in Amsterdam, where he probably earned a living by giving flute lessons.
To think that the 18th century flute repertoire only features names like Bach, Blavet, Quantz or Vivaldi would hardly do justice to the plethora of minor composers who enriched the repertoire with little gems.
Mahaut commuted between Paris and Amsterdam and generated generous acclaim for his music in both cities.

De in Namen geboren fluitist Antoine Mahaut schreef, behalve zijn bekende Méthode, talloze sonates, duetten en concerten voor fluit. De solo-sonates zijn, afgezien van de zes sonates, op. 1, alle in handschrift overgeleverd. Drie sonates uit de bibliotheek van Stockholm zijn nu voor het eerst in moderne druk verschenen en laten duidelijk horen waarom Antoine zich graag Antonio noemde. Mahaut woonde een deel van zijn leven in Amsterdam waar hij met het geven van fluitlessen in zijn levensonderhoud zal hebben voorzien.
Het 18e-eeuwse fluitrepertoire bestaat heus niet alleen uit werken van Bach, Blavet, Quantz of Vivaldi.
Ook ‘kleinere’ componisten als Mahaut verrijkten het repertoire soms met verrassende composities.
Mahaut pendelde tussen Parijs en Amsterdam en wist zijn muziek in beide steden geliefd te maken.
