Product description

René de Boisdeffre is among the few French composers from the close of the 19th century who devoted themselves intensively to chamber music. Of his output of over 90 works, almost 40 are chamber music. Besides nine opus numbered sonatas and pieces for violin and piano, he wrote two expressive viola sonatas, five cello sonatas and a piece for 2 cellos and piano op. 55. Equally significant are the piano trios op.10 in E flat major, op.32 in g minor, the piano quartet op. 13 in g minor, the piano quintets op. 11 and op. 25, the piano sextet op. 43 in B flat major, a flute sonata op. 31, an oboe sonata op. 26, 3 pieces for clarinet or viola and piano op. 40, a serenade for flute, violin and piano op. 85, and Epithalame for violin, cello, harp and organ op. 36. The aesthetics and sonority of his works follow in the footsteps of Lalo, Gounod and Saint-Saëns, while his series of genre pieces, with a programmatic' background, offers fascinating melodic inventions. Besides the three pieces for oboe and piano op. 86 (Amadeus BP 1825), joined under the title Scènes villageoises - the French colouring of the Andante highlighted 'avec un sentiment de fraîcheur et de calme' - these include his Trois Pièces pour Clarinette ou Violon avec accompagnement de Piano, op. 20, dedicated to one 'Léon Grisez' and published in 1881 by Paris publisher Enoch & Cie. Our new edition is based on that first print. Born on 3rd April 1838 in Vesoul, René le Mouton de Boisdeffre was raised in a military family. In 1843 they moved to Paris. He began to study music at the Conservatoire with Charles Wagner, one of the institute's award winners, while also pursuing literary studies. At C. Saint-Saëns's request, he soon broke off the stolid composition course with Auguste Barbereau. His first vocal works appeared in 1864. In 1865 he joined the Cercle de l'Union Artistique, as well as becoming a member of the Société Nationale de Musique. In 1878 he won a competition with his 'Marche religieuse op. 14'. This sparked a period of great creativity. His 'Pastorale' for large orchestra was performed in April 1880 at the Concerts Colonne, which he conducted himself. In 1883 the Académie des Beaux-Arts awarded him the important Prix Chartier for his services to chamber music. René de Boisdeffre died on 25th November 1906 in Vézelise (Lorraine).
