The Variations, op. 118, date back to the time when Mauro Giuliani (Bisceglie, Bari, 1781 - Naples 1829) was staying in Rome. Salvatore delle Coppelle Num 24 According to the title page of a non-autograph manuscript copy conserved in the library of the 'Orazio Vecchi' music school in Modena, the theme on which the six variations are based is taken from the ballet Cesare in Egitto (Milan, 1815) by the renowned musician and choreographer Gaetano Gioia (Naples 1768-1826): Variazioni per chitarra | Sopra un tema favorito nel ballo | Cesare in Egitto | composte da | Mauro Giuliani Gioia's work enjoyed great success throughout Italy, possibly due in part to the appreciation shown by Napoleon.1 The same theme used by Giuliani in op. 118, can also be found cited in Nicolò Paganini's Ghiribizzi MS 43 (No. 8), composed in Naples between 1819 and 1820. A couple of years after its publication in Italy, Giuliani sold op. 118 to Cappi & Diabelli,2 who published it under the title Sei | VARIAZIONI | per | Chitarra | composte da | Mauro Giuliani | Op: 118. | Vienna, | presso A. DIABELLI et COMP: There is also a third edition, published in Paris by Richault, which is identical to the Diabelli edition: SIX | Variations | POUR | LA GUITARE | Composées | PAR | Mauro Giuliani | OEuv 118 | à Paris | Chez RICHAULT, Md de Musique Editeur des OEuvres de CH. CZERNY, HUMMEL, MAYSEDER, RIES et PIXIS Our edition is based on Diabelli and Richault. Fingering was not given in the original, and is all our own.
