Carl Maria von Weber, the great German Romantic composer, wrote many concerto pieces for winds in which he used the technical and acoustic properties and capabilieties of the instruments to the full, almost defining them anew in the process. After the resonant success of the bassoon concerto op. 75, Georg Friedrich Brandt, the famous Munich bassoon soloist, asked the composer to arrange his Andante e Rondo Ungarese, originally written for viola and orchestra, for the bassoon.
This transcription was so successful that it soon attained the status of a second bassoon concerto. When the bassoonist Milan Turkovic looked for a short work for bassoon and string quartet for a concert performance, Michael Rot prepared this arrangement in which the bassoon can show its full virtuosity without any problems of balance while remaining a chamber-music-like first among equals.
