This romance Dolce rimembranza for voice, flute and piano is a delightful example of a “drawing-room” piece which provides a clear model of the musical language of Vincenzo De Michelis ( Rome 1825-1891), a language in which his lyricism and vision of a dialogue between the parts are very clear.
Thanks certainly to his wide opera experience in the orchestra of the Teatro Apollo ( formerly the Teatro di Tor di Nona ) of Rome, where he was 1st Flute during the whole period from 1867 to 1886, as well as to his long and close artistic collaboration with the Accademia Filarmonica Romana and the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Vincenzo De Michelis made a valuable contribution to the enrichment of the culture of the flute, and to music culture in general, in the context of the Italian musical setting in the later part of the nineteenth century.
His marriage to the singer and concert performer Carolina Croci also undoubtedly offered him the opportunity to deepen his knowledge of vocal techniques and potential, with which he seems to have been well familiar.
This composition comes just after his interesting Metodo per flauto (Nuovo sistema) Op. 89, published in 1874, which gives us an excellent insight into his musical thought: in a tone which almost seems to foreshadow Impressionism, he defines “the colour of sound” as playing a decisive role in the art of music, a role in which “good taste” and “the variety of colouring” constantly call for a performance which is attractive above all to the audience.
