Dual Band is een collectie van negen duetten voor twee violen gecomponeerd door Sarah Stiles. De muziek ziet er soms zo uit: een gedeelte geschreven muziek en een gedeelte als 'Impro' om je je gang te laten gaan. Een paar andere muziekstukken bestaan alleen uit tekentjes die je zelf moet vertalen om een muziekstuk te maken. Het gaat hier niet om pop of jazz. Als je al weet hoe je moet improviseren dan kan je meteen aan de gang maar als je dat allemaal niet zo meteen aandurft dan zijn er ook tips om je op weg te helpen. Je hebt nu de kans je verbeelding te gebruiken en de muziek te leiden waar je maar naar toe wilt, want strenge regels zijn er niet... En door te luisteren naar je ensemble partner tijdens het spelen en door spontaan te reageren, kan je ook tegelijkertijd je muziekvakmanschap ontwikkelen. Bij elk muziekstuk staan suggesties en ideeen achteraf om zeker te zijn dat je het meeste uit de muziek haalt en uit de 'Impro' gedeeltes in het bijzonder dus maak je geen zorgen dat je het niet kan! Dual Band is an album of duets for two violins incorporating Free Improvisation. Aimed at classical violinists who are keen on the idea of improvising, (not pop or jazz) it contains ideas and pointers to get started off in the improvisational passages. This is a totally new approach to playing and the pieces encourage everybody who is open to the idea of exploring their instrument to discover new sounds too. Some of the pieces have written sections of music followed by an IMPRO section. In this section the players are free to try out all sorts of things on their instrument and if they happen to get stuck there are always suggestions at the end of each piece. A couple of pieces use only symbols and here the players have the opportunity to translate these in their own way. The imagination can come up with some wonderful sounds and improvisational passages; some of the many possibilities are given as an example but the individual player really is free to come up with his/her own. This can be an enriching part of string teaching by introducing a new way and freedom of playing in the lesson. The results can be particularly pleasing for those students who are a little weary of their conventional teaching and benefit from sometimes being allowed to play all those sounds which they have previously been asked not to do!
