Product description

Luigi Castellacci was born in Pisa in 1797. He belonged to the guild of guitar virtuosi who, like Carulli, Call, Coste, Carcassi and Sor, travelled around Europe displaying their skills, usually with works of their own. Castellacci, who is said to have performed with Sor, also treated the mandolin 'with bravura'. In 1820 he lived in Paris. Around 1825 he travelled through Germany. Castellacci died around 1845 (in Paris?). A contemporary essay best describes his place in the hierarchy of this musical species: Among his works is much that is excellent; his Boleros in particular deserve the greatest attention, not only because Castellacci handles the Bolero better than many other composers, but also because here he is really in his element. This composer's melodies are pleasing and his modulations agreeable. While we find few new or surprising ideas here, these are surely difficult for any guitar composer to provide. We must be content if he avoids well-worn or affected ones, providing many delightful, pretty things that befit the instrument, and in this Castellacci has developed great skill and facility. As with all those composers also seeking as virtuosi to display the highest degree of technical skill, his brilliant or bravura pieces are not lacking in spectacular effects, which the dilettante cannot always emulate. Castellacci applied himself more than most of his artistic comrades to getting style and modulations right.' His amusing, theatrical and witty opera paraphrases, waltzes and fantasies have almost disappeared, partly owing to the lack of available editions. Besides his solo works, his unusually scored chamber pieces, which give the players 'equal rights', still convince and even endure in performance. A fine example is the 'FANTAISIE / Pour / Flûte ou Violon, Cor et Guitar / PAR / LUIGI CASTELLACCI / Op. 50 / A Paris. / Chez A. Petit succr. de Mr. Ch s. LAFFILLÉ, Rue Vivienne, No. 6. / au coin de la Galerie. / 633 [plate number]', whose first print (1823) was the basis for our edition (and the first score).
