Product description

Musicians of today know the names Franz and Karl Doppler almost solely as creators of programmatically inspired genre pieces for the flute. And many works are in both their names. This is hardly surprising, since the style of their fantasies, mazurkas, waltzes, chansons, berceuses, nocturnes and transcriptions of popular opera arias grew out of the national melodies of the time, entrancingly and brilliantly paraphrased for the flute. The very best of these include the present Fantasy on a Theme of Beethoven op. 46. Franz Albert Doppler was born on 16th October 1821 in Lemberg, the son of Joseph Doppler, an oboist and composer employed at times by the Warsaw opera. Alongside his younger brother Karl, Franz received a thorough musical education from his father. He first appeared in public in Vienna aged just thirteen. From 1838 to 1845 he was first flutist at the German Theatre in Pest, then at the Hungarian National Theatre, which from 1847 on also put on very successful performances of his operas. Together with Ferenc Erkel he fostered Hungarian national music. In 1853 he and his brother Karl were involved in the creation of the first Hungarian philharmonic orchestra. The brothers then went on extensive concert tours, meeting Franz Liszt in Weimar in 1854. In 1858 Franz Doppler moved to Vienna, becoming first flutist and conductor at the Hofoper. In 1864 he was given a professorship for flute at the Vienna conservatoire. In 1869 he was also appointed director of the court ballet. Despite these many commitments, he continued composing, producing operas, ballets, fantasies and concertos for one and two flutes and orchestra, besides arrangements of piano works by Liszt and Hungarian melodies. With his brother, he once again successfully toured half of Europe. At the beginning of June 1883 he went to the spa at Baden near Vienna, where he died on 27th July 1883.
