Whoever plays bravura pieces on the flute today will use a Boehm flute. It was in 1832 that Theobald Boehm began constructing a conical ring-keyed flute whose ingenious new fingering system would facilitate playing in every key. Thanks to the technical experience he had gained from goldsmithing, he succeeded in improving the uneven sound and dynamics of the flute and its lack of power compared to oboes and clarinets, particularly within the orchestra. As a travelling flute virtuoso praised by his contemporaries as 'the best flutist of our time in Germany', he was especially valued for his educational works and collections of Studies, containing in his own words 'more or less every difficulty that can be performed on the flute'. The 'modern' transverse flute's full sound and elegant playing technique led many composers, principally in France, to cultivate a genre which - in salon fantasies, paraphrases and sets of variations, for instance on popular opera melodies - invented the bravura piece as a powerful poetic and virtuosic means of expression. As a composer, Boehm also succumbed to contemporary musical taste, but at a very high level. His Fantasy on a Waltz by Schubert op. 21 in A flat major (from 1838) and the Fantasy on the German Folk Song 'Du, du liegst mir im Herzen' op. 22 in E major (1840) combine the noblest singing style with virtuoso attitude and, while requiring great skill, are of benefit to the performer.
