Product description

Jean-Louis Tulou, one of the most talented and fascinating flutists of his time, was born in Paris on 12 September 1786, the son of a bassoonist. Trained at the Conservatoire by J. G. Wunderlich, at fifteen he was already acknowledged the best flutist in France. Beginning as first flutist at the Italian opera in 1804, he was the successor of his teacher at the Grand Opéra in 1813. For some years in between, he was drawn to painting, but with little succees. When the appearance of Louis Drouet from Amsterdam threatened his reputation as the best flutist, all it took was 'a strong will, and he was once again unsurpassed'. As a declared Republican, he got into difficulties after the Restoration and had to give up his position; he concentrated on composition until his rehabilitation at the opera in 1826, and in 1829 as professor at the Conservatoire, where a lot of students gathered around him. After retiring, he left Paris in 1856 and moved to Nantes, where he died on 23 July 1865. Both in his playing and in his works, Tulou fused elements ranging from the baroque tradition to Romanticism. His brilliant technique and expressive, perfectly pitched lyricism cast as spell on his audience. Spohr, who heard him in Paris, described his sound as extremely beautiful, pure, soft and yet also powerful. Tulou did not take to the introduction of the Boehm flute, however, and stuck to his old, conical-bored keyed flute. His Méthode de Flûte of 1835 shows what a wonderful teacher he must have been. It still features performance practices such as breathing on the upbeat and imitating the singing voice. His Grands Solos, written for the yearly competitions at the Conservatoire, can be considered the cream of an output numbering some 130 works. Beside numerous duos and trios 'only' for flute, and trios and quartets for flute and strings, he left 5 flute concertos, concertante symphonies for flute, oboe, horn and bassoon with orchestra, as well as fantasies for flute and orchestra. This 'Grand Trio op. 24' follows the first print of the parts, and we have added a score; it is a splendid example of Tulou's elegant and well-balanced part-writing. It will surely be a most welcome addition to students' recitals.
