Product description

Of all his solo instrumental works written for members of the Ensemble 'Accroche-Note, Pascal Dusapin's most ambitious (along with Ipso, his second solo for clarinet) is Indeed, for solo trombone. This piece was written for the extraordinary talent of Benny Sluchin, who was also a founding member of the Ensemble InterContemporain, created by Pierre Boulez. The composer, however, began by imposing severe limitations on the instrument, in order, as he puts it, "to do everything it can to escape those limits." In this case, the trombone is limited to a range of not much more than one octave. In a sense, such a limitation is more of a compositional constraint than an instrumental one, as the composer must come up with other solutions for creating a formal shape than to build up to a high-register climax, and so forth. Dusapin does burst out of this constraint now and then (after all, he made up the rules; he can just as easily break them!). The main focus, however, is on exploring the expressive potential of the timbral changes achieved through dynamic accents and shifts, the use of mutes, sliding tones, microtones, different types of vibrato and fluttertonguing, and other sonorities such as multiphonics and humming while playing. If one could experience Indeed live, one would also more directly witness another technique the composer exploits, that of moving the instrument in space to change the timbre (spinning around backwards, for example, or swinging the horn from side to side). Indeed falls into a number of episodes, distinguished perhaps most easily by the degree of rhythmic activity. The general evolution is from greater activity to more extended phrases. One might be tempted to view the form as manifesting a progression from intense activity toward exhaustion, as if the trombone had tried to escape its confines but failed. But, Dusapin makes use of another extended technique, circular breathing, which enables the performer to continue sounding a tone while taking in air through the nose. Thus, in the latter part of the piece, the sustained tones actually continue without break for long stretches. This has the effect of conveying not exhaustion but transformation, a new way of carrying on. Indeed is a dramatic work that explores the musical potential of the solo trombone in a forceful, unique way. Indeed!
