Thomas Frederick Dunhill was born on the 1st February 1877 in London as the fourth child of Henry and Jane Dunhill. His mother owned a small music shop. His father was a manufacturer of sacks, tarpaulin and ropes. From 1893 onwards Dunhill studied the piano with Franklin Taylor at the Royal College of Music, counterpoint and harmony, as well as from 1894 onwards composition with Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924). In 1899 he received the Tagore Gold Medal which was awarded to outstanding students. Several years later he himself became a teacher for harmony and counterpoint at the Royal College. Furthermore he started working as an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royals Schools of Music which lead him through all of Great Britain and the Empire. In his later years he was active in organisations attending to the welfare of composers, for example in the Performing Rights Society and the Musicians' Benevolent Fund. He was chairman of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the dean of the music faculty at the University of London. Dunhill died highly respected on March 13th 1946 in Scunthorpe. His compositional work encompasses a number of dramatic works, orchestra works, chamber music and organ works. Beyond that he wrote books on Arthur Sullivan and Edgar Elgar. The Lyric Suite op. 96 for bassoon and piano was first published in 1941 in London.
