Originally from Bohemia, Max von Weinzierl spent most of his life in Vienna, principally as a conductor and composer of vocal works. The scarcity of viola ensemble music in the nineteenth century likely influenced Weinzierl to compose this work so that it could be performed by a standard string quartet. Thus the Viola 1 and 2 parts do not extend below the range of the violin and were originally published in treble clef, and an alternate cello part was published for the Viola 4 part.
