In July 1800, the Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung described Hoffmeister’s place in flute literature as follows: “Of all composers who have recently written so diligently for the flute, thereby contributing to the instrument’s rise, and the furthering of its skillful playing, Hoffmeister must be mentioned first. How many and how varied are his compositions for the flute? And where are the flute players among whom his works are not popular?”
These praised characteristics are most obvious in his Duos for two flutes, almost inexhaustible in both numbers and invention.* Hoffmeister enriched chamber music for flute and strings with a rich array of quartets and quintets, the latter invariably in the choice scoring with two violas.
With the following Notturno in F major, Hoffmeister gives us an enchanting serenade, the flute once again offering a delightful garland of melodies, especially in the Adagio.
Hoffmeister published the work himself in ca. 1811 as an undated set of the parts (this is its first
publication in score), under the title: „Notturno / a / Flauto, Violino, Viola, 2 Corni / e / Basso /
del Sigr. F. A. Hoffmeister / Vienna presso Hoffmeister / No. 203 [plate number].“
