Product description

Play Piano Now! is for busy adults whose practice time is limited, and for adults without previous musical training. It is a slower-paced method that uses the same conceptual core of our original Adult Piano Course, but with several very important added features: more gradual introduction of music fundamentals, more pages of reinforcement more...and a greater emphasis on sight-reading exercises, one of the most important skills needed to ensure long-term enjoyment of the piano. Includes specially marked written exercises that can be completed away from the keyboard.

This beginning piano method for adult beginners takes the conceptual core from Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course. It adds technique and reinforcement activities, additional pieces and written exercises within each unit. The result is a method that gradually introduces basic elements and skills, at a pace that allows students to absorb and integrate new skills before advancing. Each unit typically begins with the introduction of a new musical element, then is followed by sight playing, warm-ups, written work and some repertoire using the new element in different ways. The reading approach is landmark/intervallic and positional, generally using middle-C, C-major and G-major positions. It begins on black keys, progresses to playing by letter name, then moves to the grand staff in Unit Three. Unit Four introduces melodic and harmonic intervals; by Unit Six, the student is playing the C-major chord in the left hand. The V7 and IV chords in standard inversions are quickly introduced, and the remainder of the book generally uses the hands together with chords accompanying a single-line melody. Students can purchase an optional CD or GM disk providing further accompaniments. A number of familiar tunes throughout the book may appeal to students.

The majority of tunes, however, are in C major, and the repertoire does not veer from song textures--melodies with accompaniments. Sharps and flats are introduced near the end of the book, but different key signatures are not discussed or used in Book 1. Also omitted is the underlying structure of the V7 and IV chords--the reasons for their particular symbols. Some adult students will want to understand these principles and will require the teacher to fill in the gaps.
