Product description

His creative urge, the variety of instrumental forms of expression, unfl agging melodic invention and solid compositional technique are enthusiastically praised by connoisseurs, now that the chamber and concert music of Franz Anton Hoffmeister is being reintroduced. For too long it was dismissed as simply pretty gebrauchsmusik. Now his 'casual approach' and the subtlety with which he masters the formal play of themes and melody make his works an unmissable alternative to the classical and romantic repertoire. It is delightful to see how he keeps the 'conversation' going between the players, perfectly balancing question and answer in melody, development and passagework. Besides 16 string quintets and 16 flute quintets (with 2 violas), Hoffmeister gave us some 60 string quartets. These include a convolute of 6 quartets scored with 2 violas instead of 2 violins, a variant also cultivated by Giuseppe Cambini, Carl Stamitz, Ignaz Pleyel and Johann Andreas Amon. The present quartet is a wonderful example of Hoffmeister's brilliant display of the fl ute. We present the work in accordance with the contemporary print of the parts from 1785, titled: 'QUATUOR / à / FLUTE TR AVERSIERE / Violon / Alto / et / Violoncelle / COMPOSÉ / par / MR. FRANC. ANT. HOFFMEISTER / Publié, et se Vend à Vienne au son Magazin / de Musique / [Incipit] / 14 [Pl.-No.]' Franz Anton Hoffmeister was born in Rothenburg on the Neckar in 1754. Having finished his juristic studies, he devoted himself entirely to music. In 1784 he founded a music publishing house in Vienna. After 1798 this became the 'Bureau de Musique de Hoffmeister & Kühnel', which he ran with A. Kühnel. Besides being a publisher whose work set lofty artistic standards, he left a large oeuvre of remarkable quality, still not entirely known. In the field of instrumental music he contributed to almost every genre. Among these, more than 350 titles for the flute (in multifarious combinations) take pride of place, reflecting as they do the great variety - in taste and technique - then in demand. Hoffmeister, friend and publisher of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven (who in a letter called him his 'most beloved brother'), Dittersdorf and Albrechtsberger, can be said to have enriched the repertoire of his great authors with his own quintets, quartets, trios, duos and soli. Franz Anton Hoffmeister died highly respected on the 9th February 1812 in Vienna.
