The 1762 Breitkopf Catalogue includes the “incipit” of a “Viola Solo con Basso di Benda”. This sonata was hitherto considered lost. We here present, for the first time, the complete musical text, taken from a copy for violin in b flat minor done by Friedrich Wilhelm Rust (1739–1796). We can assume that the viola version is the original. For one thing, it was not before July 1763 that Rust was sent by his “gracious Prince” to Benda in Potsdam, where “he enjoyed his superb teaching for nine months”; and two little errors in the bass point to a subsequent transposition. The sonata also lies far better and more naturally (1st position) on the viola than on the violin, in the awkward key of b flat minor.
