Product description

The German romantic piano pieces transcribed in this volume are all of a modest size and intimate character, which makes them particularly effective on the guitar. I have tried to render them as accurately as possible with fingerings that reflect the phrasing and romantic style of the originals. To the best of my knowledge much of this music has not been previously transcribed for the guitar. The guitar was a popular instrument in Vienna during the early 19th century, and the voicing of the Schubert's harmony is often surprisingly guitaristic. Schubert wrote for the guitar occasionally in chamber ensembles but never as a solo instrument. The two Allegretto movements in this collection are important, mature works that lend themselves to the instrument because of their chordal writing and lean textures. The sixth of the Moments Musicaux was originally published separately in 1824 and the C minor Allegretto of 1827 is almost a seventh Moment Musical in spirit. Schumann took great joy in composing his Album for the Young, op. 68, and was able to maintain a clearly personal style, even while writing in a relatively simple and direct style for young pianists. The small scale and transparent textures of these works allow many of them to be played on the guitar, and since they inhabit a larger area of the guitar's range and sound, they perhaps take on new weight in these versions. While most of Brahms' piano music is too thickly textured for the guitar, his Op. 39 Waltzes were written in a lighter style. Brahms even published a simplified piano version in which some of the original keys were changed. The selections in this volume retain in the original order of the cycle from nos. 9 through 13. The famous Ab Waltz (no. 15) is often played independently and concludes the group. The transcriptions have retained the original markings and note values as much as possible, in order to most closely indicate the composers' intentions. Editorial guitar slurs are differentiated from piano phrasing marks by the use of a broken line. In some instances notes cannot be held for their full indicated value on the guitar, but the original notation has been retained to reflect the composers' intentions. Allen Krantz
