The second version Op.29, which dates from 1876, is a more authoritative source as it evidently represents WidorÆs final intentions. Unfortunately it has not yet been possible to examine original manuscripts for the two versions. Enquiries have been addressed to the Bibliotheque Nationale de France/Departements de la Musique in Paris, the central editorial office of the RISM (Repertoire International des Sources Musicales), but these have been fruitless. This new edition has therefore been based upon two first editions of 1867 (Heugel No.H4653) and 1892 (Hamelle No.J 3428H). The original version of the Variations contains some significant discrepancies from the later version. Listening every detail in which they differ would have required an unnecessarily lengthy critical commentary, so it has been decided instead to present both versions, with the earlier version followed by the later. Fingerings and pedal markings are by Widor himself, with no editorial editions.
