Productomschrijving

The Bononcini family are among the most eminent of those representatives of Italian High Baroque who, in their operas, oratorios, cantatas and church symphonies refined the 'moving, sensitive' drama of Belcanto by inserting soloistic instrumental interludes between aria and chorus. The father, Giovanni Maria, already created a ten-volume instrumental oeuvre of great mellifluousness, stylistically even ahead of the works of Corelli. These include our 24 pieces for 2 violins above a bass, which Bononcini published in 1678, his last year of life, in Bologna as 'Arie e Correnti à tre, due violini e violone'. These dance pieces are in the tradition of the early baroque Sonata da camera. A reprint of the edition appeared in 1701 in London, titled 'Ayres in 3 parts'. This was followed about four years later by an arrangement of the work in which, by repositioning and transposition, the movements were adapted to the compass and technique of the treble recorder. The title of the undated set of parts, in oblong format and mentioning the possibility of playing the pieces 'without a bass', reads: Bononcini's / Aires / for two / Flutes and a Bass / or two / Flutes with out a Bass / the AIRES Consisting of / Allemands Sarabands Corants / Preludes Gavots and Jiggs / with a Through BASS for the / Harpsichord or Bass Violin / Fairly Engraven / London, Printed for I. Walsh and Hare. Giovanni Maria Bononcini was born in Montecorone near Modena in the year 1642 (baptized on 23rd September). There are no records of his musical education apart from a mention in his 'Musico prattico' that he studied counterpoint with Padre Agostino Bendinelli (*1635). Very young, he joined the court at Modena, where he must have been trained as a violinist. At the end of the 17th century, it was the norm in Italy to appoint good violinists as Capellmeisters rather than musicians who could only play the organ. Soon he was Capellmeister of the churches San Giovanni in Monte and San Petronio in Bologna. He was simultaneously elected a member of the influential and renowned Accademia Filarmonica. At times he also wrote about musical matters. Parts of his teaching method Musico prattico were translated into German and printed in 1701 (by Paul Treu, Stuttgart). In 1671 Bononcini was appointed court violinist in Modena. He was active there as cathedral Capellmeister until his death on 18 November 1678. His instrumental output, of which only a fraction has been explored so far, still awaits republication. Bononcini's sons Antonio Maria and Giovanni Battista also found fame as composers. The latter even managed to compete 'on an equal footing' with Handel in London, where he succeeded in satisfying the public's musical taste to such a degree that arias from his operas became popular songs.
