Productomschrijving

Thanks to its high compositional standard, rich melodic imagination and technical balance, the hitherto almost forgotten output of Caspar Kummer is now enjoying a well-deserved revival. Printed during his lifetime, his quartets for flute and strings document a historical step in the transition from classicism to early romanticism, an epoch in which the 'suppression' of the flute from the repertoire caused the printed parts of such masterpieces as these to subside into archival slumber. Now at last we can take a look at these pearls of intimate chamber music and, in modern editions, make them accessible to amateurs and professionals alike; indeed, this is the first score print of the flute quartets, now available in their entirety from Amadeus. Beside the quartets, Kummer's output is rich in combinations in which the flute 'naturally' dominates. Apart from the numerous Duos, increasingly popular in teaching, they include his almost indispensable Trio op. 32 for flute, clarinet (viola) and bassoon with its thrilling Finale, his Serenade for flute, viola and guitar (piano) op. 81, the two Duos op. 46 for flute and clarinet, the Trio in C major for flute, viola (violin) and piano op. 75, the Grand Trio brillant for two flutes and piano op. 67, as well as an Adagio with Variations for basset-horn and orchestra op. 45. A fine flute method testifies to his pedagogic activities. We follow the republication of the 'Kleine leichte Duetteö (Amadeus BP 475), the 'Drei konzertante Duos op. 25' (BP 883) and the '3 Duos faciles op. 132' (BP 1650) with the present 'TRIO pour trois flûtes op. 53', in a revised edition in 1879 by Offenbach publisher André. This work's ductus and instrumental wit is a precursor of the romanticising salon period, as is evident in the unusual phrasings. Caspar Kummer was born in Erlau near Schleusingen on 10 December 1795. He received his first flute lessons from a Mr. Neumeister. From 1813 on he is listed as flutist in the Coburg castle orchestra, conducted by Louis Drouet. Later promoted to first flutist, Kummer rose to the post of ducal music director. This highly esteemed virtuoso, teacher and composer died in Coburg on the 21st of May 1870. In R. S. Rockstro's Treatise of the Flute of 1928, he declares: 'The talent of this gifted composer shines forth not only in his chamber-music, which is really exeptionally fine, but even his lightest and easiest fantasias are consummately elegant, and always wellwritten; indeed, I know of no composer of music for the flute, whose works are of such uniform excellence as those of Kaspar Kummer.' After such praise, who could ignore the Coburg master's creations?
