Productomschrijving

Now that the identity of the two namesakes from the Belgien family of musicians, Jean Baptiste Loeillet de Gant and his eight years older cousin, the “other” Jean Baptiste Loeillet, is clear, it seems best to use just John Loeillet in new editions of the latter’s works. John Loeillet was born to Jean Baptiste François Loeillet (*1653) in 1680 in Gent and baptized as Jean Baptiste on 18th November. It seems that after the early death of his father (1685) he was taught music by his uncle Pierre Loeillet, until he moved to London in 1705. There he first worked as an oboist at the Queen’s Theatre at the Haymarket, then from 1707 to 1710 at the opera. Having won recognition as a harpsichordist and teacher, the composer organized concerts of his own in his house on Hart Street, giving for instance the first London performance of Corelli’s Concerti grossi. His fame grew when, from 1720 on, Walsh & Hare (London) published his works in five collections: 24 Trio Sonatas (op. 1, 2 and 4), 12 Solo Sonatas op. 3 and six Suites for harpsichord. They boast a rich harmony, a predilection for three-part forms and long melodic lines. John Loeillet died a wealthy man on 19th July 1730 in London. The present 3 Trio Sonatas for two flutes (or violins) and Basso continuo come from the collection published in 1725 in three books of parts. The musical text as such of the Walsh print is astonishingly precise and has been set in modern type without any changes. The very richly figured “Basso continuo” part has been realized in accordance with the source.
