Gade's 'Fantasy Pieces op. 43' are among those original contributions for clarinet and piano from the second part of the 19th century which were loved for their programmatic approach. The composer encapsulated the instrument's specific timbre in these ballad-style pieces. They were first published in 1864, titled: FANTASIESTÜCKE / für Clarinette (od. Violine) u. Pianoforte / componiert / und / HERRN KAMMERMUSIKER / MOZART PETERSEN / gewidmet / von / NIELS W. GADE. / OP. 43. / Pr. M. 4. / LEIPZIG, FR. KISTNER. / 2850 [Pl.-Nr.] The alternative version for violin and piano was probably done for commercial reasons. Inspired by it, we have added a viola instead of a violin part, the viola being closer in timbre to the clarinet. Both Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann praised the Nordic tone and perfect form of Gade's output, which remained in concert repertoires in Denmark, England and Germany for decades. His chamber music is desirable because accessible also to amateur groups, and may soon be considered worthwhile, for instance his String Octet op. 17, the String Sextet op. 44, the String Quintet op. 8 (Amadeus BP 1072), the String Quartet in D major op. 63 of 1888 (BP 619) and the Piano Trio F major op. 42. Gade's orchestral oeuvre (8 symphonies, ouvertures, concerti and genre pieces) and especially his emotional programmatic choral works - they include the moving great lied epic Elverskud (Elfking's Daughter) - are just as deserving of a revival. Niels Wilhelm Gade was born on 22nd February 1817 in Copenhagen, the son of a carpenter who soon encouraged his musical gifts. He first taught himself the piano, the guitar and the violin. He was later formally trained by A. P. Berggreen and Chr. Weyse. He made his debut as a 'violin pupil' in Copenhagen's royal orchestra. At 24, his ouverture 'Reminiscences of Ossian' won him first prize and a scholarship in a composition competition. In 1843 he set out for Leipzig, where he became a friend of Mendelssohn and Schumann. The first performance of his first Symphony was rapturously received, laying the foundation for Gade's international fame. In 1844 he was appointed, with Mendelssohn, as second conductor of the Gewandhaus concerts; after Mendelssohn's death in 1874 he became the sole capellmeister. Gade seemed assured of a brillant career. But in 1848, during the Schleswig-Holstein-Danish troubles, he returned to Copenhagen, where he accepted a post as organist and the conductorship of the Music Society concerts. In 1861 he was appointed director of music to the court. Niels W. Gade's administrative skills and interpretative gifts, perfectly allied to his compositional genius, made him a leading, towering figure in the musical life of Copenhagen. He died on 21st December 1890.
