These sonatas reveal a great independence of thought in melodic writing that pushed the boundaries of flute technique further than before. They consist of highly ornamented, virtuoso, parts for the flute in a style that expresses a freedom and brilliance unique in English flute sonatas of this period. From a technical point of view, the range of notes required is exceptional; for the first time, flute-players in England were required to venture up to g'''.
Lewis Granom (c.1700–1782) was one of the most famous English flute players. No doubt, his experiences as both teacher and performer made him highly eligible to write the first flute treatise by a named English author. His compositions for the flute include three volumes of sonatas. These highly accomplished pieces go way beyond the technical expectations of his contemporaries, making Granom one of the most exciting composers and theorists of the century, sadly neglected until now.
