Productomschrijving

From time immemorial, composers have dedicated works to close, well-off patrons and pupils in the hope they will gratefully ensure a wide circulation of their creation. In a separate dedication, the author of this opus testifies to the great talent of 'Marechal Général De Valogny', remarking that the performance of these pieces will bring him success. Indeed, these progressively graded Duets are a convincing supplement to the teaching repertory. We present these Duos, titled 'Sonata I-VI', in a performing edition and according to the first print of the score from around 1748. The title of the original edition reads: PIECES A DEUX / BASSONS OU VIOLONCELLES, / Dediées / A MONSIEUR DE VALOGNY, Mestre de Camp et Marechal Général / de Logis des Armées du Roy. / Composés / PA R MR. G U I L L EMA N T, / Maître de Flûte et Basson, / OEuvre IIIe. / A PARIS / Chés LÆAuteur ... Benoît Guillemant's dates are still unknown. From 1746 to 1757 he lived in Paris, a much admired flutist and composer. He performed regularly in the Concert Spirituel. His instrumental works, mostly published by himself, are dominated by the flute. His six quartets op. 1 for 2 flutes, violin and thorough bass of 1746 already display a profound knowledge of the flute's specific techniques. Guillemant's 'Six Sonates' for 2 flutes and bass of 1749 can stand comparison with the masterpieces of Blavet and Hotteterre. A symphony reviewed in 1751 and a flute concerto praised in 1754 are presumed lost. One of his later works, the Trois suites d'airs harmonieux et chantants for transverse flute and obbligato violin, op. 6, from 1757, impresses by its charming alternation of songlike nobility and strict harmonic moulding. This is also true of the posthumous Deux petites suites pour deux flûtes qui peuvent se jouer sur le hautbois et le violon et font un bon essai sur les flûtes à la tierce: most exquisite pieces !
