Aside from solo concertos and the enchantingly mellifluous double concerto with harp (K 299), Mozart also gave flutists quartets for flute and strings, works now essential to the repertoire. And this despite the fact that, according to his own testimony, he found the flute's sound difficult to bear, as he complained to his father in a letter dated 14 February 1778 from Mannheim: '... and you know that I become quite powerless whenever I am obliged to write for an instrument that I cannot bear.' This refers to the works he 'saw himself obliged' to compose in Mannheim on his journey to Paris for the wealthy Dutchman Ferdinand de Jean, 'who is a great friend and admirer of mine / truly a rare man, he will give you 200 fl. to make him 3 little, easy and short concertos, and a pair of quattro on the flute.' (Mozart's letter to Salzburg on 10 December). Sadly, during his later years in Vienna Mozart composed no further solo works for flute with piano or orchestra. Already during his lifetime, the lack of flute sonatas by the master led to his violin sonatas, in particular, being used for the flute. In part, these are transcriptions by contemporary composers whose names remained unknown and whom publishers inspired to very cleverly capture the flute's specific sound, without as a rule any alteration of the original piano part. During the later 19th century it was composers such as Ernest Eugène Altès and Jules Demersseman who continued this practice. The source of the present edition is the undated print published around 1825 in Hamburg, titled: Six / SONATES / pour / Le Forte=Piano / avec accomp: d'une Flûte / par / W. A. MOZART. / N o. 1 (2) / Hambourg / Chez Jean Auguste Böhme. We compared this print with the Paris edition of the transcription of Sonatas K 378 (317d), 379 (373a) and 380 (374f ), titled: Trois sonates pour le forte piano, avec accompagnement de flûte ou violon et violoncelle. Par Mozart, op. 2, 2e livraison. Paris I. Pleyel No. 214. On a thematically related theme, Amadeus has published a version for two flutes and piano based on the arrangement for 2 violins and piano of the Sonata in D major for two pianos K 448 by Ferdinand David. Here lyricism and virtuosity in the upper voices are ideally matched to the flute's idiom (Amadeus BP 1250).
