There you are, guitar teacher, with pupils in their first lesson. What to do?
They have a guitar, so, put two right hand fingers (m-i) on string 2 and 3 and pluck, b g b g. There's music! Do it again, with the left forefinger in fret I string 2: c' g c' g: music! And again with little finger on string 2: d' g d' g: more music, result! And so on. Doing so, the pupil is going home with his or her's First Melody, proudly showing this to the parents, family and friends. The rest is history.
This is the way I started teaching the guitar to children. All the pieces in 'A Couple of Chords' are 'composed' in the lesson, sending the pupil home with an easy to study little piece of music, giving motivation to move forward!
All returned the next week to perform the little piece in the lesson, showing their performance to orher pupils with success, eager to learn more.
The same thing happened with A Set of Soli', being very easy performance pieces pupils are proud of to be able to play. Together with the arpeggio technique in 'A Couple of Chords' these pieces develope the technique of playing melody with bass and chord accompaniment, with very satisfactory results for the very beginning guitar pupil.
Music in its essence, as easy as can be.
