Productomschrijving

The original Schubert's song with the commonly accepted name Ave Maria (Hail Mary; because of the opening words and refrain in the original) originates from a setting of seven songs, composed 1825, based on Walter Scott's poem 'The Lady of the Lake' in the German translation by Adam Storck. In the poem, the Lady of the Lake has gone with her father to hide in a nearby cave to avoid drawing the vengeance of the King on their host, the Alpine clan chieftain Roderick Dhu, who has been affording them shelter since the King exiled them. She sings a prayer addressed to the Virgin Mary, calling upon her for help. Ellen is overheard by Roderick Dhu who is higher on the mountain raising the clan for war.

Within the cycle this song is number six. The original is composed in B flat major for female voice accompanied by pianoforte and consists of three verses.
