Franz Anton Hoffmeister's viola concerto, a standard work of viola literature, while often feared for its unusually virtuosic solo part, has also been criticized for the apparent plainness of its orchestral writing; but if we apply the right yardstick to it and compare it with the viola concertos of Carl Stamitz, Antonio Rosetti and Giuseppe Cambini, we see the work as a whole in a new light: layout, proportions, modulations, use of the melodic and rhythmic material, all these have structure and purpose, and keep players and listeners expectant and delighted. The wind instruments' role, too (in the Finale, oboes and horns merely strengthen the rondo theme), is neither scant nor amateurish, but adds a touch of colour absolutely typical for the period. As regards instrumentation and scoring, it is worth recalling the practical advice found in instrumental methods after 1750: 3 first and 3 second violins, one viola (which is also why nowhere in the source does the orchestral viola part have tutti or solo!), violoncello and violone; the bass group was joined by a harpsichord and a bassoon, especially when using more violins in the tutti passages. Important: the solo parts of the viola principale were frequent accompanied by only one player of the respective orchestral part!
