Vivaldi's unique 'LEstro Armonico', a collection of 12 violin concerti op. III, was first published in 1712/13 by Estienne Roger in Amsterdam. It was the publisher Roger, who soon recognized the young Venetian composer's talent and asked for this series of concerti, whose unusual variable instrumentation of one solo violin, 2 solo violins and 4 solo violins with strings and Basso continuo, and also two concerti with 2 and 4 violins and cello obligato have remained unparalleled in literature. The works probably date back to the period after 1700, as copies of these concerti have been found in contemporary musical centres such as Dresden, Vienna, Naples and Schwerin. It seems likely that Vivaldi fulfilled the publisher's demand by selecting from a larger number of tried and tested works those deemed best suited for publication. The significance and musical substance of this first printed collection of concerti by Vivaldi is underlined by the reprints which soon followed. In 1715 they were offered by Walsh and Hare in London, in 1717 there was already a reprint by Roger, in 1723 another by Walsh, and in 1750 by Le Clerc in Paris. The title of the first print reads: L'Estro Armonico / CONCERTI / Consacrati / All'Altezza Reale / Di / Ferdinando III / Gran Prencipe di Toscana / Da D. Antonio Vivaldi / Musico di Violino e Maestro de Concerti del / Pio Ospidale della Pieta di Venezia / Opera Terza / Libro Secondo. / A AMSTERDAM / Aux depens d'Estienne Roger Marchand Libraire / & Michel Charles Le Cene.
