Productomschrijving

Since 1988 I have been writing music for performers of early music, and from 1998 most of this has been modelled on techniques, forms and musical structures from this music. I wrote a Credo and Benedicamus Domino for a Worcester Ladymass that Anna Maria Friman constructed from the Worcester Fragments. These sections, however, do not appear in the manuscript and so have to be composed and then inserted in such a way that they maintain the same ethos and can be accepted as part of such a Ladymass without any sense of incongruity. The Credo is a long text and so is set for the most part with one note per syllable. Some variety is achieved by not having all three voices sing every word so that textural change is possible by one or more voice holding the first word of a phrase as a short drone to allow another voice, or pair of voices, to continue the melody and text. The only point where there is florid movement in all parts is for the final 'amen'. The music is not conceived in terms of vertical harmony but rather as harmony emerging by implication as a bi-product of melodic and contrapuntal lines.Benedicamus Domino is much shorter and the text only consists of five words. Its function in the mass is to tell the congregation to leave and this is mirrored by the progressive entry of the three voices, imitatively one after the other. Here the music is much freer in its use of extended quasi-improvisational lines and with each word being considerably extended by having several notes to a syllable. A third piece, Ave Regina Gloriosa that I had already written for the Trio Mediaeval, was used for the processional, to be sung during the exit of the congregation. Gavin Bryars (2013)
