Liszt wrote little original music for two pianos, although he made a large body of arrangements, usually of orchestral pieces or works for piano and orchestra. His two important original works are issued together in this volume: the Großes Konzertstück über Themen aus Mendelssohns 'Lieder ohne Worte' (first publication) and the Concerto pathétique (first publication of the 1866 and 1884 editions in tandem). The inventive and entertaining Grand Concert-piece on three of Mendelssohn's opus 19 "Songs without Words" is, extraordinarily, published here for the first time, and the authentic texts of both editions - neither available for more than a century - of the powerful Concerto pathétique are here printed in tandem for the first time. This urtext edition has been prepared from manuscript sources in Liszt's hand and in the hand of contemporary copyists, and from first editions, with diligent critical comparison.
