Coedition The University of Chicago Press - Ricordi The publication of the piano-vocal score of La traviata in the critical edition The Works of Giuseppe Verdi (WGV) is an important instrument for disseminating and deepening knowledge of one of the most famous of all operatic works. The contents are divided into two volumes, the first of which contains the text of the complete opera and the second the Introduction, the Critical Notes on the text and the two Appendices.
Appendix 1 reproduces the first version of Violetta's aria "Addio del passato", and the weighty section entitled Appendix 2 offers interpreters and scholars all the (performable) musical material pertaining to what Verdi wrote for the opera's first - famously disastrous - performance at La Fenice in Venice in March 1853. This material has not been published before, as it was superseded by the version Verdi prepared for the revival of the opera the following year, still in Venice but at the Teatro San Benedetto.
The edition is based on revision of the text from the autograph, analysis of Verdi's sketches and drafts and numerous other sources. The Introduction, in addition to giving the historical background to the origins, composition and reception of the opera, also deals with aspects which are of great interest to the interpreter, such as the cuts made in the text from the 19th century to the present day.
