"To title a book of guitar-solo pieces which are, on average, Grades 5-6 stan dard, The Young Guitarist, and also including on the front cover "First Collection" , gives completely the wrong impression. One immediately assumes easy pieces for the early grades, aimed at youngsters. One can imagine parents or grandparents purchasing this type of book for a young player and then having him or her being terribly disappointed at not being able to play through the contents. The title is missleading.
The book opens optimistically enough with a pleasant little mazurka around the Grade 2 mark, but then things leap up a few grades with the set of variations on the "Twinkle Twinkle Lit tle Star" theme by Mozart. Elsewhere, we have the ever-popular "Mi Favorita"; Chopin's "Prelude Op. 28 No. 7" (marked as an "extract" but is in fact the whole 16 bars); a Prelude and Impromptu from the delightful pen of Victorian guitar ist Ernest Shand; and a canzone (more often known as "Se Io M'Accorgo") by either anonymous or Vincenzo Galilei, depending upon which version you come across. This last one is around the Grade 4 mark; all the others are a couple of grades higher. The rest of the book is filled out with three quite pleasant, romantic-styled pieces by one David Del Castillo, a charming sarabande from the 17th century by Saint Luc, and a traditional dance from Italy.
