The study of the violin was for Honegger an important part of his musical training and it had a decisive influence on the above all linear and polyphonic nature of his compositions. The First Sonata marked an important stage in the mastering of large-scale form and prefigures the architecture of the brilliant symphonies he wrote after 1930. The Second Sonata returned to more concise proportions, reflecting an aesthetic that is closer to the spirit of the Groupe des Six. As for the exquisite Sonatina for two violins, this was first performed in 1920 in Paris by Milhaud and Honegger and, with its character of light, carefree entertainment, it is typical of what was being composed at that time in Paris. Composed in 1940, the Sonata for solo violin belongs to a darker period. With four short movements, the work fits the mould of a neo-baroque suite rather than that of a classical or post-romantic sonata. So here are, brought together for the first time, the complete published works of Honegger for the violin. Violinists will be delighted to find in this album not just all the compositions with piano, but also the repertory for one or two solo violins.
