'Play Klezmer! 'bevat een selectie van Jiddische feestmuziek - waarin een lach en een traan dicht bij elkaar liggen. Het woord klezmer is een samenvoeging van de Hebreeuwse woorden 'kele' (stem) en 'zemer' (instrument). Oorspronkelijk werd klezmer gespeeld door klezmorim, muzikanten die door Oost-Europa trokken en in elk gebied iets van de locale muziekcultuur oppikten. Zo werd klezmer een smeltkroes van diverse muziekstijlen. De muziek vond haar weg naar Amerika, waar ze hoogtij vierde rond de jaren dertig. In de jaren zeventig werd de klezmermuziek herontdekt, waarna ze vanuit Amerika weer naar Europa overwaaide. In the 1970s klezmer music was rediscovered, after which it came back to Europe trom America. In most cases, dynamics and tempo are not to strictly fixed but there are certain guidelines. You can bring your own interpretation into play after all, this is what the klezmorin did.
