Carl Andreas Göpfert, in his lifetime salaried Chamber Musician to the Duke of Sachsen- Meinigen, excellent virtuoso on the clarinet and admirable composer, was born on 16 January 1768 in Rimpar near Würzburg, the son of a surgical officer. Initially taught singing, piano and organ by the local schoolmaster, his preference for the clarinet led him in 1780 to the celebrated Würzburg clarinet virtuoso Philipp Meissner, who may also have taught him the rudiments of composition. Göpfert's rapidly acquired phenomenal skill on the clarinet led to his being engaged as first clarinettist of the Meiningen court orchestra at the age of 20. He was also entrusted with conducting the military corps' wind band. Whenever offers of better posts, particularly in Vienna, caused him to ask for leave of absence or even a discharge, this was refused with promises of salary increases. As his gentle character prevented him from insisting, he had less and less opportunity to become known further afield as a virtuoso, which would certainly have brought him as much acclaim as did his very popular compositions (Universal-Lexicon der Tonkunst, 1836). He received a golden medal for dedicating a Fantasia militare for wind band to King Wilhelm III. Honoured as a lovable, upright person, Göpfert died in Meiningen on 11 April 1818. Göpfert's compositional output, valued and much played during his lifetime, now mostly slumbers in archives. Unjustly so - for his concertos, quartets and duos for clarinet contain a wealth of tuneful recital pieces, often easy to play. A good example is the present first publication in score of his QUATUOR / pour la /Clarinette / Violon Alto & Violoncelle, / composé par / A. Goepfert. / No 2. / Prix 3. Francs. / └ Bonn chez N. Simrock. / 356 [plate number], as runs the title of the first set of parts published in 1803. The quartet's slow movement is a gem with its noble, incomparable melody. Göpfert left another 4 clarinet quartets. 40 numbered works appeared in his lifetime, including five clarinet concertos (op. 1 in B flat major, op. 14 in E flat, op. 20 in B flat, op. 27 in B flat, op. 35 in E flat), a concerto in F for horn and orchestra op. 21, two Duos concertants for clarinet and bassoon op. 19, six Duos faciles for two clarinets op. 30, 24 Duos faciles for two horns op. 31. Unpublished works include three symphonies, an oboe concerto, a trumpet concerto, a double concerto for 2 bassoons, a Concertante for clarinet, bassoon and orchestra, piano pieces, songs, guitar pieces and a wealth of sonorous wind band pieces.
