Productomschrijving

Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, born on the 3rd of February 1736 in Klosterneuburg, deceased on the 7th of March 1809 in Vienna, can be considered the most eminent contrapuntist of Viennese Classicism. Trained as a choirboy, where musical knowledge was concerned he was essentially self-taught. In 1753/54 he studied philosophy alongside Michael Haydn. A year later he held an organist's post in Raab (Hungary), In 1760 he came to Melk in the same capacity. In 1772 he became second, in 1791 first court organist in Vienna, then held the influential post of court capellmeister until his death in 1793. The present quintet is on account of its length an particularly impressive example of this skill. / 48 Kr. / à Vienne, au Bureau d'Arts et d'Industrie / Rue Kohlmarkt No. 269. This new edition in score and parts follows this almost faultless first print. As evident from the title, the quintet is enriched by many contrapuntal master-strokes. Albrechtsberger, second only to Johann Sebastian Bach as a composer of fugues, admitted not without pride: 'I have no merit in making good fugues, for no idea occurs to me that cannot be used for double counterpoint.' With this attractive quintet he succeeds once again brilliantly in refuting the prejudice of 'dry fugues'. The work is also excellently suited for performances with a string orchestra. (Extra string parts are available separately.)
