Maria Rita Brondi was almost 18 years old when, in April 1907, she transcribed this wonderful and famous piece of the Norwegian composer Johan Severin Svendsen (1840-1911). She had just come back from Barcelona, where she had studied Spanish music with Francisco Tàrrega. Her recital1 for guitar performed in mid-February in Barcelona was a great success. Svendsen's Romanza for violin and orchestra Op. 26 (1881) is certainly one of the Norwegian compositor's most famous pieces, a very popular hit in northern Europe countries, that was transcribed several times. It's likely that Maria Rita listened to this piece in Germany before arriving in Paris, immediately sensing how perfectly the cantabile violin and her guitar could match together.
