Productomschrijving

In his lifetime, Joseph Fröhlich made such a mark on the musical education of his hometown Würzburg that his large compositional output attracted little notice. He used his comprehensive expertise to follow his contemporaries' historical development and artistic concerns in numerous treatises and reviews. And his didactic works were the intellectual- technical foundation of the musical syllabus. Among them a 'Systematischer Unterricht der Singkunst überhaupt, sowie des Gesangs in öffentlichen Schulen und der vorzüglichsten Orchester-Instrumente' [systematic teaching of singing in general, singing in state schools, and of the foremost orchestral instruments] - from the violin to the serpent. Sadly, most of his works still in manuscript were destroyed during the war. So far, only a few of his compositions have appeared in print. Aside from a piano concerto in D major, 3 piano sonatas, some songs and a hymn 'Der Erdkreis huldigt', in 1805 Gombart of Augsburg first published the parts of the present Serenade op. 20 (making the present edition its first appearance in score). It is their lyric charm and balletic spirit that make these pieces special. All the instruments in this unusual combination are given rewarding solo passages, and there is some virtuosity for the viola. The alternative version using a bassoon instead of the cello, which appears in the 4th variation of the Andante, is original. Franz Joseph Fröhlich was born in Würzburg on 28 May 1780. After high school and basic musical training from the Julius Hospital student institute, he studied law and philosophy at the university. In 1801 we find him a violinist in the prince bishop's court orchestra; following this, he conducted the 'Akademisches Musikinstitut', founded three years previously at the university. With state support, he used his managerial skills to turn the institute, which he directed until retiring in 1858, into one of the best in the country. In 1820 a general singing school was added to it. Parallel to his, he lectured on music history at the university. In 1812 he was made professor of aesthetics and in 1819 of pedagogy and didactics. In 1854 he retired from his academic posts, to which had been added in 1834 the responsibility of the collections of antiquities, paintings and engravings. His 'lost' works include Masses, a Requiem, Litanies, an opera 'Scipio', cantatas and choral works, symphonies, concertos for violin, flute, clarinet, horn and harp, orchestral serenades and concertantes for several solo instruments and orchestra. In 1814 he was awarded an honorary doctorate. Joseph Fröhlich died in Würzburg on 5 January 1862, almost eighty-two.
