After completing his first series of Slavonic Dances,that same year (1878) Dvorak set about writing the String Sextet in A major for two violins, two violas and two cellos. This weighty chamber work from the composer's so-called Slav period is characteristic for its formal perfection of structure and melodious themes. References to Slavonic Dances are reinforced by the titles of the central movements - Dumka and Furiant. This title is part of the first Complete Critical Edition of Works by Antonin Dvorak.
