Solo V begins with the powerful low B flat of the Bassoon. Together with the lowest notes of the bassoon a big spectrum of overtones is sounding, audible in a good, not to dry acoustic, especially when repeated several times. I have used this instrumental quality in the piece. I strived to create an unceasingly latent impression of polypfony.

At times real polyphonic, multiphonic passages sounds; the bassoon is perhaps the best suited wind instrument for muliphonics. In the piece there are several micro tone passages.

For the richness of overtones of the Bassoon are to be heard well, strong nuances is dominating the piece. The character in Solo V hence became dramatic and intensive. The Soloist must be able to create long melodic lines and big forms. The work is demanding, both physicaly and interpretation wise for the player.

I have dedicated Solo V to the composer, and solo bassooninst in Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Harri Ahmas
– Kalevi Aho, 1999
