The Sonatas and Fantasies has been consistently popular since first publication in 1956, in part because it is the rare edition complete in one volume (332 pp.). The new spiral binding allows the book to lie flat, making performing from this inch-thick tome much easier. Nathan Broder noted that "no complete and thoroughly reliable edition of Mozart's piano sonatas and fantasies has been available up to now (1956)." For someone with an abiding love of Mozart's music, Broder must have thoroughly enjoyed researching these piano works back to the original autographs, in most part, or earliest publications. This is truly a scholarly edition, in which Broder corrects many errors from previous editions, even adding and subtracting pieces as necessary. He details differences in his edition from previous versions from other publishers, and includes notes on the performance of appoggiaturas, trills, and staccato found in Mozart's piano pieces.The original edition was revised in 1960, when Broder was presented with photostats of the autograph of Sonata in D, K.311. Additional corrections were made. 352 pages.
