While the admiring contemporaries of Johann Nepomuk Hummel were quite tentative in their attempts at loosening the fetters of the “standard language” of the Viennese Classics in favour of the sounds of the Romantic dawn, this composer and piano virtuoso while marked as one of their most gifted pupils by his teachers Mozart, Albrechtsberger and Salieri was among the brilliant forerunners of an epoch whose works’ “passionate, subjective, excitable and fantastical expression was ahead of the Romantic idiom by almost two decades.” His grandiose piano concertos and sonatas, “in which he speaks Mozart’s language, but is not (any longer) touched by his spirit”, brilliantly illustrate this historical development. This emotional transformation can also be perceived in Hummel’s chamber music; while rooted in his educators’ compositional legacy, its use of ornamentation, chromatically inflected passagework, runs in thirds and sixths and unfurling chords achieves impressive
heights. We find the same characteristics in Hummel’s sonata output for one melody instrument and piano.
We have republished his Sonata in A major for flute and piano composed in 1814 or 1815 according to the undated print.
