Handel's Sonata in g minor for Violin solo (HWV364) dates from arond 1724 (the autograph manuscript is in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge). At the bottom of the first page again one octave lower and in alto clef, adding Per la Viola da Gamba. The work was published by Roger in Amsterdam in a guise for Hoboy solo. A later edition by Samuel Arnold (approximately 1793) and Chrysander's complete edition (1879) designate it as a sonata for Oboe. The work was published by Schott in London in 1950 as a sonata for Viola da Gamba (edited by Thurston Dart). The present publication is based on contemporary copy in which the sonata has been transposed to a minor. This copy is in the Mecklenburgische Landesbibliothek in Schwerin. The realization of the base is deliberately simple. The editorial additions relating to the rhythm, dynamics and articulation, denoted by square brackets, are only suggestions intended to encourage the player to adopt a creative approach to the score.
