The source of the present Sonata in F major by Johann Friedrich Fasch (FaWV.d3) is a contemporary copy of parts kept by the Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Darmstadt under shelfmark “Mus Ms 298-9”. The separate title page, with the incipit of the first movement reads: Sonata / a / 2 Hautb. / 2 Basson. / Fasch. / The individual parts are respectively headed Oboe .1. / Oboe .2. / Basson Princ / Basson Secunde. There is no separate Basso part. The copyist’s copy is most carefully done, with matching articulations and expression marks. Praise is now to the great master Fasch, whose impressive compositional output, unpublished during his lifetime, is gradually being “discovered”. His instrumental pieces reveal an outstanding master of counterpoint; still rooted in the baroque tradition, they are however works of transition that, without renouncing polyphonic writing, prefigure the musical style of the motives of the rococo period. As if aiming to supply the traditional world of form with new contents in new guises, the motives of the “old style” switch to thematically articulated melodic sections, which anticipate the string setting of the classical orchestra. This is obvious in his chamber music, whose transparency and avoidance of continuolinked fill-in parts pave the way to the string quartet. Hurrying ahead of the taste of his time, Fasch uses canonic rigour while letting the ornamentation of the melodic idea take its course; he thereby becomes one of the decisive pioneers of new music.
